Missed IIT with 200+ Marks in JEE? How JoSAA Mistakes Cost Us hard earned money, a Year & Mental Peace | IIT Counselling Guide 2025

JoSAA 2025 Mistakes Students Made, Real Stories & Our Expert Counselling Plan

🎓 "We Scored High, But Still Lost: The Untold Truth Behind JoSAA Mistakes"

I scored 200+ in JEE Advanced—a score many would celebrate, a score that screams “You’re IIT material.”
I thought it was my ticket to the future.

But then reality hit harder than any exam result.

As a General Category student, I watched some of my friends with much lower scores—but under reserved categories—walk into IIT ISM Dhanbad, even IIT BHU, with proud smiles and admission letters.

Meanwhile, I sat refreshing JoSAA’s website, round after round, realizing I wasn’t even in the game.

It wasn’t about jealousy. It was about helplessness—that feeling of giving your best, and still watching the system slip past you.
No guidance. No mentor. No second chance.

💔 Rahul Jha’s Story – A Mistake That Cost More Than ₹45,000

And it didn’t end with me. My younger brother, Rahul Jha, was next in line. He had a decent rank and managed to get a college in Round 5.

But in the final round, he changed his choices based on some YouTube video recommendations without understanding the freeze/float options correctly.

He ended up losing the seat and worse—₹45,000 in non-refundable seat acceptance fees.

No college. No admission.
Just depression, anxiety, and a whole year wasted.

He isolated himself. Fear of missing out (FOMO) gripped him every time results season came around. While others went to freshers’ parties, he battled regret and sleepless nights.

We asked ourselves:

“Why did we make it through the toughest exam in India, only to lose because of a counselling mistake?”

💡 Abroadpedia Was Born from These Failures

These stories—mine, Rahul’s, and thousands of others—led to the birth of Abroadpedia.

This is not a story about one or two guys; thousands don't come up, and hundreds of them complain, and yearly, we see someone's stories in the news or on social media.

timeline-style list of real and relatable stories (some based on actual cases and common mistakes) of students missing IIT/NIT admissions or losing money due to JoSAA counseling mistakes.

📚 JoSAA Counseling Mistakes: Real Stories (2017–2024)

🗓 2017 – "Wrong Order, Wrong College"

  • Student: Ravi from Bihar

  • Mistake: He gave Mechanical at a lower-tier NIT higher preference than CS at IIIT Hyderabad.

  • Consequence: Got stuck in a branch he never wanted. Later dropped out after 1 year.

🗓 2018 – "Didn’t Freeze in Time"

  • Student: Ankita from Madhya Pradesh

  • Mistake: Didn't freeze her preferred college in Round 2 thinking she could get IIT in later rounds.

  • Consequence: Slid to a lower-preferred NIT in Round 3. Lost original seat, couldn't get back.

🗓 2019 – "Didn’t Accept Offer"

  • Student: Saurabh from Rajasthan

  • Mistake: Received NIT Warangal but forgot to pay the seat acceptance fee before the deadline.

  • Consequence: Lost the seat entirely. Had to take a gap year.

🗓 2020 – "COVID Confusion"

  • Student: Priya from Tamil Nadu

  • Mistake: Misread deadline dates due to new COVID guidelines and online-only process.

  • Consequence: Missed JoSAA entirely. Paid lakhs for admission in a private college with poor infrastructure.

🗓 2021 – "AAT Confusion for Architecture"

  • Student: Danish from Uttar Pradesh

  • Mistake: Cleared JEE and AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) but didn’t fill AAT-specific choices in JoSAA.

  • Consequence: Lost the chance to apply for B.Arch at IIT Roorkee and Kharagpur.

🗓 2022 – "Didn’t Verify Documents"

  • Student: Rina from Assam

  • Mistake: Uploaded a blurred caste certificate and didn't re-upload even after getting an email reminder.

  • Consequence: Her seat was cancelled. Had to take admission in a private college later.

🗓 2023 – "Fake Agent Trap"

  • Student: Manjeet from Jharkhand

  • Mistake: Paid ₹20,000 to a "counseling expert" who promised NIT seat. The person vanished.

  • Consequence: Lost money, lost time, lost chance. Filed police complaint but no resolution.

🗓 2024 – "Parental Pressure & Misinformation"

  • Student: Aayushi from Nepal (studied in India)

  • Mistake: Her parents forced her to pick nearby NIT (NIT Patna) over better branches in NIT Trichy or IIIT Hyderabad.

  • Consequence: Regretted decision after realizing the quality gap. Now preparing for re-admission.

🔄 Common Threads Across the Years:

  • ⏰ Missed deadlines.

  • 💸 Non-payment of acceptance fees.

  • 📝 Wrong order of choice filling.

  • 😕 Lack of understanding between Freeze/Float/Slide.

  • 🧑‍💻 No proper guidance on cutoff trends and college ranking.

  • 🎣 Scams by fake counselors or agents.

🧭 The Story of Abroadpedia — Past, Present & Future

In the early days of JoSAA counseling (around 2017–2019), we witnessed thousands of students make irreversible mistakes — from missing out on choice filling deadlines to accepting the wrong colleges, or even losing their hard-earned money due to confusion in the counseling process.

That’s when we, a small group of volunteers, came together to launch an initiative we randomly named "Abroadpedia" — not just for overseas education, but to guide students through Indian and international admission processes with clarity, empathy, and facts.

We helped:

  • Students fill choices wisely and avoid last-minute blunders.

  • Aspirants understand what suits them — IITs, NITs, IIITs, or abroad.

  • Individuals get into top colleges — some of whom are now working at companies like Deloitte or pursuing their dream careers.

And we did all of this for free — purely driven by the cause.
There were no courses, no paid memberships — only genuine help.

😞 What Went Wrong?

After COVID:

  • We became inactive.

  • We passed the initiative to a few individuals.

  • The clarity faded.

  • Growth paused.

  • There was no monetization model.

  • We didn’t know what direction Abroadpedia should take — Indian counseling? Abroad? Hybrid?

🔄 Where Are We Now?

From Tuesday, June 3, 2025, and JoSAA counseling begins again.

We realize that students still make the same mistakes every year.

And now, we want to revive Abroadpedia — not just as a passion project, but as a sustainable platform that can:

  • Help students across India & Nepal.

  • Earn us our bread and butter.

  • Scale meaningfully while staying rooted in genuine intent.

📌 Top 10 FAQs

  1. Can I get IIT with 200+ marks in JEE Advanced?
➤ Only if your rank falls within the cut-off range. Check category-wise opening and closing ranks.

  2. Can I apply for NITs if I appeared only for JEE Main?
➤ Yes. JEE Main rank is used for NITs, IIITs & GFTIs.

  3. Can I apply to both IITs and NITs?
➤ Yes, but IIT choices will be considered only if you qualify JEE Advanced.

  4. What is Freeze/Float/Slide in JoSAA?

    • Freeze: Final choice, no change.

    • Float: Wait for a better branch in any institute.

    • Slide: Wait for a better branch in same institute.

  5. Do I have to pay every round?
➤ No. Pay only once after seat allotment. Repeated payment is a mistake.

  6. Can I change my choices after locking?
➤ No. Choice Locking is final — revise wisely before final submission.

  7. What is the seat acceptance fee?
    ➤ ₹35,000 (General/OBC), ₹15,000 (SC/ST/PwD) – Refundable if no admission taken.

  8. What is the role of Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT)?
➤ Required for admission to B.Arch at IIT Roorkee, Kharagpur. Must qualify JEE Advanced first.

  9. How to apply for B.Planning courses?
➤ Apply via JEE Main Paper 2. Available in select NITs, SPAs, and GFTIs.

  10. What happens if I miss the reporting deadline?
➤ Your seat is CANCELLED. You may lose both the seat and the fee.

⚠️ Top Mistakes to Avoid

  1. 💸 Not Locking Choices on Time → Auto-lock may hurt your allotment.

  2. 💡 Choosing Popular College Over Right Branch → Rank wisely.

  3. 🧾 Wrong Category/Quota Fill → Leads to rejection.

  4. Not Verifying Documents at Reporting Centre → Allotment cancelled.

  5. 😔 No Backup Plan → Not choosing lower preference institutes = ZERO admission.

  6. 💀 Ignoring Mock Seat Allotment → It helps improve choice order.

  7. 📉 Trusting Only Rank, Not Trends → Always analyze last 3 years' cutoffs.

Expert Tip:

“JoSAA isn’t just about scores — it’s about smart counselling.”
Abroadpedia offers personalized mentorship to help you avoid these fatal errors.
